Our Prince Rupert Fishing 2011 trip was a good one for the crew of FishinBC. On the boat my nephew oak, neal, hammer, and myself. My brother was also able to come up for 3 days this year. He doesn’t have a nickname so Oak coined him Teddy. Our anchorman Ron Bergundy (B.O.) was unable to come out this year but we were able to text him some pics of our fishing days from out on the water.
Salmon Fishing
We headed out from Prince Rupert to target the runs of migratory chinook moving toward the Skeena River. We fished around Edye Pass, Avery, and up at Dundas Island. Our big spring this year was caught by Hammer. It doesn’t touch BO’s 62lb chinook from 2010 but it was a good spring and a good fight. We had nicknamed hammer coho-lingerson because for the first half of the trip all he could catch were coho and lings, so finally almost near the end of the trip he gets onto a really nice spring and we’ve got the video footage posted here on FishinBC. The rest of us also got into quite a few springs and coho over the trip, but most were in the teens or twenty pound range. This year was an odd year for fish and there was a significant component of jacks returning, more than we’ve ever seen since 2001.
Halibut Takedown
We also had some good weather and were able to head offshore to the halibut grounds. Our top fish this trip was Oaks 104lb 59inch halibut, caught on a spreader bar salmon head combo. At the time this fish took over the boat record for halibut which was formerly Neals 74lb hali from 2010. On our trips the biggest halibut title is deemed the Halibelt champion. The Halibelt tradition came about in 2010 after vacuum sealing Neal’s halibut fillets the bags curved a bit and the white skin showing through the bag this was immortalized as the trophy for best halibut just like a championship UFC belt to be worn around the waist.
Fishing Fails
We had some classic fishing fails on this trip too, a big yacht pulled up anchor with a ton of kelp dangling from the bow, Teddy getting stereo-bombed by donald duck and a oak with a textbook long-line release of some codfish that was destined to be beautiful halibut bait. On our way home a checkin by the game wardens, it was a bit of a process because our deepfreezer had died during the trip, so to preserve the fish we filled it all full of fish and sea ice to the top, and to dig this all out took alot of time and work. But eventually the fish were all out and tallied and everything was in good order. The 2011 fishing fail photo award has to go to Neal for his Captain Morgan pose beside the shore campfire with black socks halfway to his knees.
